WHAT's NEW?

The Summer is speeding by and I am beginning to feel the pressure of getting things finished.
I must say- things are just not very linear in my life! I like it to be- and love working on things in a nice orderly process... HA! Fat Chance!

Let me bring you up to date:
Hummm lets see...

A couple of Friday's ago, I avoided a head on car crash! I did get hit- I was driving my Dad's car as we were going to lunch on a rainy Friday as we always do. A man in a jeep who admittedly said he was not paying attention, turned in front of me and smashed the whole drivers side of the car. AND YES! I was fine after a few days of pain but uugh! It sucked! Although, I am GLAD I was driving and that my Dad did not get hurt.

Then my front steps needed repair because they were crumbling (they are old!) so I hired a local handyman who had worked in the neighborhood. Well he seemed okay I guess at first... Long story short- he went off with my money and I could not find him for a few days. He said he was robbed. Well thanks to my Father In Law- who is a Homicide Detective in Baltimore- he came by and when this man showed up- my Father in Law- had a LONG talk with him. Well... the stairs are now finished- and I managed to get some yard work done, my gutters cleaned and a few other little things fixed in return.
UGH! It is good to have backup but I tell you- I will never hire someone without a license again!

Now I am in the process of having my backyard and stairs redone as it needs it SO BAD. It was decided (by Mother Nature) that I will need to put in a small deck. It is more of a necessary project than just something I want. It is a lot to think about for sure.

AND finally- I am going back to COLLEGE TEACHING! Huzzah! I was asked to return to Towson University to teach. I took on 2 classes for the Fall. I think it is going to be a great way to stay grounded in the world of fine art and teaching and keep contact with humans instead of cats and the internet. Goodness it is SO NICE to be asked... And so nice to go back to the college where I once was a grad student...

Anyway...
And in between all of this I have been working on painting...
Just for fun and because it is like therapy...

Keeping my head down and working...

When I am not here on the internet or on my cell phone updating my Twitter-OH Shoving food in my mouth! HA!

I am in the studio mostly-working on things.

I have been building and painting mostly.


(I did clean up a good bit on Sunday which felt good. Took out the scooters and the bike and swept and straightened...)
 
AND finally if I am not working on the studio:

I have been going to art openings and saying hello to friends from far away like Ms. Angie Mason at the ART*STAR Opening!
 
And John- who is a SKILLED hunter and gatherer!
 
and I might be taking silly photos...

Or I am planting and growing!

New Work Begins...

I have been frustrate lately with the work I have been doing.

I think it comes from just doing it so much as well as teaching it...

I feel restless and in need of a change. Or maybe just a challenge.

When I came back from California I felt as if I had experience one of those MOMENTS of clarity as you read about... I felt as if I had turned away from my roots in the world of Fine Art. I miss the gallery scenes, I miss working on a body of work which comes with deeper meanings... I am tried of little projects which have a beginning, middle and end in under a week. I used to work for months and months on a body of work. I would research, read, investigate themes and really dig deep for the work I made...

This is what I have been missing I think.

And so I decided to venture off and start a new body of work. For myself and to feed my soul. HA! Luckily I have a direction in mind Thank Goodness!!! HA!

So off I go- to dig deep.

Ahhh it feels good to smell cut wood and to think more challenging thoughts.
I do hope this all works out... Haaa- I never honestly know in the beginning- I just know I WANT it TOO!

“Science Under Glass- Insect Wing Pendant”
Imagine going on a “behind the scenes tour” at a Natural History museum and being able to open a drawer of beautiful insects. What a thrill to see such an arrangement of such delicate and beautiful little jewel-like creatures. Their wings reflect such light, color, and detail. They are truly fascinating and pretty.

Blending the two worlds of science and art create an amazingly elegant insect wing pendant. Start with creating a base from brass and building a bezel setting to fit your perfect little wonderment. You will learn some great techniques for making lovely bezel settings for this project and beyond. Build a lovely little collage out of an insect wing, vintage images and text, then set it carefully under glass. Finish your project with creating a necklace for your pendant, make a sturdy clasp, and wire wrap little adornments for detail.

This is a project class and each student will come away with a finished piece of art to wear.

 
“Demolition Pendant! Break out of the box!”
Do you ever get tired of the “pretty”? I certainly do. There is something very satisfying about breaking something apart and recreating it better than it was before! Using a small candy tin container as your starting point, deconstruct and dissect this tin box structure and rebuild it into a wearable sculptural piece of art.

We begin with talking about aesthetics and how to start the demolition process. Next we begin to break things! Learn to purposely alter structures by cutting, hammering, and drilling. Successfully attach parts together using a variety of both hot and cold fusion techniques.  Adorn your new creation with the things you have brought with you –such as- tiny charms, text, old tintype images, or even old forks and spoons. Finally design a necklace and clasp for your newly created art object.

This is a project-based class focusing heavily on your unique and individual style. Each piece will be different than the next even though they all start out using the same structure
